Tim,
Did you give Gentoo a try yet?
I'm still playing around with it on my laptop. The install really took 
FOIREVER, Compiling KDE3 is a very slow process on a PII 300. But once 
installed I like it so far. I'm probably going to install on my main desktop 
machine next week.
