[KLUG Members] Gentoo Linux questions

I have been using gentoo for about 3 weeks now and I love it. As far as
speed goes, gentoo by far runs faster than any other distro I have ever
tried.
I installed RH 7.3 from the iso's on my athlon 1900+ box with 512MB ram
and ata100 hdd and It just didn't perform. Apps in kde took forever to
load.
Gentoo on the same box with some compiling optimizations runs very well.
KDE is now a desktop that I enjoy using. There is no difference in
responsiveness between it and winxp on the same box.
Portage, the bsd style ports system for gentoo is for the most part very
good. It is however still evolving and can't be relied on 100%. What I
mean by that is there may be certain apps that just don't quite compile
properly. Opera comes to mind as the only one that I had to actually get
the binary and install myself.

I would categorize myself as a linux novice right now but I have learned
more about linux since using gentoo than from any other distro. By having
to configure most things myself I am forced to learn.

   Good luck
    Steven Owens
