What hdparm settings are they using be default? (Assuming this is an IDE
setting).  Redhat and most distros use very conservative settings.  It
is highly unlikely that as big a performance boost as you describe comes
solely from an optimized compile.  hdparm setting can have a very large
impact on the responsiveness-feel of a system.
