You do.  Trust me.

New hard drives are relatively very, very cheap -- I don't mean
relative to last year, which is also true, but relative to the
stress on your blood pressure as you rip your hair out six
months from now when you realize something important is GONE.

Or even the cost of restoring from backup, always a big hassle
even when it goes smoothly, which it never does.

Buying new hard drives at the first sign of trouble, to me, is like
changing my car's oil:  cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
