In the original message I think he indicated the XP box was the client, 
but I could be wrong.

Anywho....

Recent versions of GNOME (nautilus) have CIFS browsing built in as part
of the VFS (just go smb:///)

With Ximian GNOME (XD2) open office can open/save directly to browseable
CIFS resoursed, no screwing about with smbmount, etc...  There is a
"Windows Network" icon on the desktop.  You can even browse NFS shares
without mounting!

Indications are that this is BUILT INTO THE 2.6 KERNEL, along with
similair functionality for Novell networks.  Way Cool!!!

You setuid the smbmnt command.  It is a crappy hack, but fortunately the
new kernels and GNOME VFS will eliminate the need for such bestial
measures.
