I came to Linux from an AIX background (my first real OS experience
unless CP/M counts). We have both older (AIX 3.2.5 - 4.2.1) and newer
(5L) RS/6000 platforms in the same racks as our xSeries/Netfinity Linux
boxes. They get along splendidly. We used Open Source (samba, etc...)
on AIX long before we had a Linux server. The AIX boxes authenticate
with the OpenLDAP Dit, etc... with no complaints. NFS works as well as
NFS ever does.

Of course our Citrix and Goldsync (NT4) servers are fully integrated
with the Linux servers as well - domain members and all.

Linux is kind of like the bable fish.
