LOCAL_RELAY is for email addresses without an "@" (send to "fred").
SMART_HOST is for everything else (send to "fred@domain").
If you absolutely everything to forward through your ISP's server,
I'd set them both.

Yeah, it screws up mail readers and the mailing list archives
(as Peter pointed out). Take a look if you want to see:

Threading is calculated on mail headers not normally displayed,
it has nothing to do with the subject line.
