.openoffice is probably it, some packages rename this directory. If it
contains files like "LICENSE", "setup.log" and "instdb.ins" this is most
certainly it.   This is where OOo stores per-user config, preferences,
etc...  I have mine go wonky once years ago, but no problems since.

On a SuSe box the global defaults copy of this directory is
/opt/OpenOffice.org

Do you get any interesting messages if you just type "OOo" on the
command line in a terminal window? (OOo is the command on SuSe to start
OpenOffice).
