Thanks for clarifying the SCSI issue. My scanner is (usually) the only SCSI 
device on the bus. In fact, it has its own dedicated PCI card (Adaptec 
AVA-2906), which I'd like to remove someday, but I cannot justify replacing 
my old reliable ScanJet 3c (which cost a "pretty penny" back in the day!) 
with anything newer.

I'm guessing that your HP scanner is older than my ScanJet 3c, which comes 
with a simple, built-in, manual switch for SCSI termination.
