No, mine is slightly newer, a Scanjet 5P, and it has automatic
termination, but that's not the issue.

The problem is whenever you unplug the scanner with builtin termination
(manual or automatic, doesn't matter), you are also unplugging the
terminator from the end of the SCSI bus.  This WILL cause severe
problems with other devices on the bus.  OTOH, if the scanner is the
only device on the bus, then YMMV.  :-)
