[KLUG Members] testing SATA drive

My neighbor brought over a dead computer recently. Apparently they had
lots of hacking problems, removed them all (so they say) and then,
--surprise! -- the computer no longer would boot.

A quick look shows the BIOS no longer recognizes the HD. The drive is
connected o.k. and spins up. I couldn't find any place to put in the HD
parameters manually.

The drive is Serial ATA and I don't have any other boxes that have that
interface to test whether it is the drive or the computer. Any ideas?

kind regards,

bill
