Sounds like the MBR may be gone!
Master Boot Record...

To restore your MBR, boot a DOS rescue 
floppy and type FDISK /MBR

You did have the BIOS auto-detect the drives?
The BIOS battery may be dead...
It could be one of a hundred and two other things...
If none of that works and you have no other place
to test the drive... I'd be willing to accept the dead
PC as a donation to my favorite charity.
